"Wear Your Life Jacket to Work" for National Safe Boating Week

Are you wondering what you can do to help promote safe boating during National Safe Boating Week May 17-23?

The National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) is hosting its annual “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day Friday, May 16 to help raise awareness of available life jackets, the different types and wearability. The event is happening nationwide, in every work environment.

According to a U.S. Coast Guard statistic, 85 percent of those who drowned in 2012 were not wearing a life jacket. These simple, yet essential pieces of safety gear really save lives on the water.

“This event promotes life jacket safety awareness in a fun, effective way,” says Pete Chisholm, product safety manager at Mercury Marine. “Wear a life jacket when you boat – that’s the simple message we're promoting. A life jacket won't do you any good if it is stuffed under the seat in your boat. It needs to be worn for it to work. Today's life jackets are lightweight, comfortable, and won't interfere with your activities.”

If you decide to participate, NSBC is asking that you submit a photo of yourself wearing your life jacket at work on the “Ready, Set, Wear It!” Facebook page.
