Toledo Zoo Raises Sturgeon to Release into Lake Erie

The Toledo Zoo will release about 3,000 young sturgeon into the Maumee River, one of Lake Erie’s largest tributaries, on October 6. Zoo officials are hoping the event will help restore the sturgeon population, which is almost extinct.

Sturgeon were once abundant in Lake Erie, but overfishing caused the population to drop significantly, even though the species can live to 100 years or longer.

Attendees on October 6 will be able to release some of the 6- to 7-inch fish themselves. For more information, visit
