Stormcloud Brewing Hosts Writing Contest

Some artists, it is said, need a little “liquid aid” to fully tap into their creative sides. If you’re one of those writers whose words come more easily after a glass (or two) of cold beer, then Stormcloud Brewing Company in Frankfort, Michigan, has the contest for you.

For its second year, Stormcloud Brewing Company is holding a writing contest in honor of the annual release of its “Gerald’s Talking Dog” beer, a Belgian Rye Dubbel fermented with sweet and sour Michigan cherries. Entrants are largely free to let their imaginations run away with them, with the exception of two stipulations: the title of each story must be “Gerald’s Talking Dog,” and the story must begin with the line, “Gerald’s Talking Dog loves cherries. That’s all he talks about…”

A panel of three judges will select the writing-contest winners, and the top three stories will be presented at public reading in Stormcloud’s pub on Saturday, December 12 at 7:30pm. The readings will be followed by live music. For those with an attention span only capable of handling Buzzfeed-eque lists, rather than Dickensian novels, worry not: tales are capped at 500 words.

Winners of the contest will not only gain fame, but fortune: 1st place prize is a one-year Cloudspotter Membership, a $50 Stormcloud gift card, and a Stormcloud growler and fill; 2nd place will receive a $25 gift card plus growler and fill; and 3rd place will receive a $15 gift card. Winning stories will also be published in The Betsie Current newspaper.

Submissions are due by noon on Friday, December 4, and should be emailed to or dropped off at the pub. For more entry details, check out
