MEOSAR Knowledge Center Launched

Boaters can learn more about the intricacies of search and rescue operations now with the launch of the MEOSAR Knowledge Center — an online information portal for the newest Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue (MEOSAR) satellite system.

The website will allow distress beacon owners, government agencies, members of the media, and search-and-rescue related personnel around the world to keep track of MEOSAR’s deployment and better understand how the satellite system works. In particular, a visit to the MEOSAR Knowledge Center website will give visitors access to MEOSAR’s deployment schedule and status, educational webinars and presentations, and information on MEOSAR’s role in SAR initiatives, such as the European Commission’s HELIOS project.

When the MEOSAR system is fully up and running — estimated in the next few years — it will be able to detect and locate distress beacon signals almost instantaneously, whereas today it typically takes about 45 minutes or longer.
