Canada and Ontario Sign New Great Lakes Agreement

The governments of Canada and Ontario signed the Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality and Ecosystem Health (COA) last week, renewing their commitment to restore, protect and conserve the Great Lakes.

The five-year agreement will: take action to address algal blooms; complete actions to clean up historical Areas of Concern including the Niagara River and Peninsula Harbour; help aquatic invasive species from entering the lakes; protect the lakes from harmful pollution; conserve important fish and wildlife habitats; and strengthen collaboration with the Great Lakes community.

"The Great Lakes are vitally important to the people of Ontario,” said Glen Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. “Our vision is a healthy Great Lakes for a stronger Ontario—Great Lakes that continue to be drinkable, swimmable and fishable. This agreement will help us implement Ontario's Great Lakes Strategy.”
