Canada Delays Decision on Nuclear Waste Site Near Lake Huron

The Canadian government has announced that it’s delaying the decision on whether or not to OK a nuclear waste storage facility near the shore of Lake Huron.

Ontario Power Generation wants to bury about 200,000 cubic meters of low to medium level nuclear waste a half mile below ground level. The area, located at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station near Kincardine, Ontario, is less than a mile from Lake Huron.

According to Michigan Radio, the Trudeau government had a December 2, 2015 deadline to decide whether to OK the nuclear waste site, but the agency has delayed its decision until March 1, 2016.

This controversial nuclear waste facility is opposed by many regional governmental and environmental groups.
