Weather Watch

Lakeland boaters have access to weather information via a rapidly-growing number of sources, including:

NOAA Weather Radio – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides continuous voice broadcasts of weather forecasts and current bulletins covering most of the Great Lakes region on their NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) system.

USCG VHF Voice – The United States Coast Guard (USCG) transmits weather forecasts and warnings on Very High Frequency (VHF) Channel 22A following an initial call on VHF Channel 16; and provides near-continuous coverage of the Great Lakes region

NAVTEX –The Canadian government operates the NAVTEX broadcast services for the Great Lakes. It provides weather and seasonal ice-related information in a text format.

Phone Recordings – Many NWS offices offer pre-recorded marine and local weather information via telephone. Numbers are usually listed under United States Government, Department of Commerce, National Weather Service.

Dial-A-Buoy – You can also obtain updated winds and wave data from buoys stationed in the Great Lakes by dialing 1-228-688-1948 and entering the desired five-digit station ID.
