| A Whole New Water Hazard |
"The rules are pretty much the same as for regular golf. Whoever gets the ball in the hole first wins the match," an aquarium spokesman told the People's Daily. But there's a slight difference between this golf tournament and the regular ones - this one is played underwater.
Held at the Zuohai Aquarium in Fuzhou city, Fujian province, China, five players in a 50-foot deep tank battled for the crown in what is believed to be the first underwater golf tournament.
While the objective was still to be the first to put a ball in the hole, scoring was done on time rather than number of strokes. The quickest person to get their ball in the hole won that hole.
"The water makes the match very interesting. Not only fish and mammals distract the players, but their buoyancy makes it hard for them to stabilise themselves." Water currents, he said, also made projecting the trajectory of the ball less of an art than a gamble.
The winner of the tournament sunk his ball in only one minute and 20 seconds while the last place finisher took five minutes to complete the hole.
