| Followed by a Shadow |
There are, apparently, no limits to extravagance. As megayachts populate the seas more and more, the shadow yacht has started to come to prevalence. Shadow yachts, a sort of trailer yacht, are floating garages to carry collections of helicopters, cars, motorcycles, jet skis and motorboats, keeping you free from that indignity of renting a car when you reach your exclusive port.
Sometimes coming with a garage-style interior, the ships can also carry extra fuel, water, spare part and supplies, leaving you free to visit more remote destinations for longer periods of time.
Newer shadow yachts come equipped with a more stately interior. Shadow Marine of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the main builder of shadow yachts, using decommissioned oil-supply boats, recently introduced the Allure shadow yacht that comes complete with six staterooms, a pool, sky lounge, theater, game room and mini gym.
The Allure is able to hold as many as 500 people and the hangar bay can be converted into a climate-controlled nightclub complete with a DJ booth. Despite its price tag of $35 million, Shadow Yachts say the vessel is practical. "You can do things with a primary vessel and a shadow boat that you could never do with one large boat, Jon Stuart, Shadow Marine's creative director, told the Wall Street Journal. It makes more sense economically to have two smaller vessels than one giant 500-foot vessel."
