| Surfer/Model to the Rescue |
When professional surfer-turned-model Roxy Louw saw a sinking boat from the private balcony of her hotel room in Cape Town, South Africa, she called the coast guard. She then put on her wetsuit and ran to the beach.
Grabbing a swimming buoy, the 19-year old, voted sixth sexiest woman in the world in 2007 by FHM Magazine, dove into the water and swam towards the boat. "I stood on the balcony of my little flat on the beach, and saw a boat sinking and people in the water," Louw told the Daily Mail. "Although I'm not a lifesaver, I know the ocean and I'm quite a strong swimmer because of my surfing.
"Your adrenaline, your instinct takes over. I got smashed against a rock, but my mind just repeated: 'Save the people, save the people.'"
On board were Gareth and Jane Evans, their 11-year old son, Justin and Cara Watt, and three crew members. They had been taking a trip around Robben Island on the charter boat when kelp became lodged in the vessel's turbines, leaving them dead in the water. Water then began cascading into the boat, making it begin to sink in an area known for sharks.
Two life guards who were off duty but at the beach met Louw at the vessel. They found two crew members under the water and pulled them to shore. The passengers were wearing life preservers. "The boat started to sink and we had to swim," Jane Evans told the Daily Mail. "The surfer also helped us swim to the beach."
