Inferno Drifts Towards Resort
Sailing from Istanbul to the Italian port of Trieste, the 633 foot Und Adriyatik had a cargo of 200 trucks and 11 tons of hazardous material on board when it caught fire Wednesday in the Adriatic Sea, threatening the recently protected coastline of Croatia.

"All passengers, 31 of them, are safe and were evacuated by the crew of the Greek ship Ikarus Palace. They are on their way to Trieste, Italy, right now," Marina Haluzan, a spokeswoman for the Croatian ministry, told the Daily Mail.

Both the Turkish and Croatian authorities are refusing to say what type of hazardous materials are on the ship.

Just 15 nautical miles off the coast of the Brijuni Islands, declared a national park in 1983 and known for their remarkable biological diversity, the ship was in danger of sinking.

The ship caught fire early in the day according to Turkey's maritime authority and efforts to douse the fire continued for two days. No cause of the fire is yet known. Efforts to stabilize the temperature of the burning vessel prevented the ship's structure from melting and exposing the hazardous cargo to the water. Croatian workers were then able to attach tow lines to the freighter and direct it to shore.

While the oil spill and hazardous material dump was averted, environmentalists fear that fumes from the fire will affect the area and other popular tourist destinations lining the Adriatic Sea.
