Inland Seas Seeks $25K For Scholarships, Equipment
Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA), a group that is working to develop environmental stewards and the next generation of Great Lakes scientists, recently turned to Facebook to collect $25,000 that would fund scholarships and necessary scientific equipment, according to an article published in the Great Lakes Echo.ISEA hopes to be a winner in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant competition, decided by the amount of Facebook votes the association receives. If ISEA wins, the $25,000 prize also would go to fund school trips for those who normally could not afford to participate and replace broken equipment, including thermometers and plankton nets.
ISEA was created in 1989 to provide aquatic, hands-on education for people of all ages.
The State Farm Neighborhood Assist competition received a variety of applicants this year, and all contestants focused on one of three categories: Community development, education or safety, according to the article. Voting officially closed May 17, and on Tuesday, May 27, the "Final 40 causes" that received the most votes — and thus are eligible to win the $25,000 grants — will be announced.
