Float Plan

The most important safety measure you can take while on a boating excursion happens before you even leave the dock. Before you push off, fill out a detailed float plan and give it to a reliable friend or family member who will not be traveling with you. Don't try to file it with the Coast Guard, they do not have the resources to handle the thousands of voyages that take place each day. If you fail to return or check in on time, the holder of your float plan will know something has gone wrong and can contact authorities.

We suggest you print several copies of the float plan form and get in the habit of filling a float plan out every time you leave your slip. Remember, it is essential that you check in along your route, that you contact the holder of your float plan to amend it if there has been a change of plans en route (the C.G. can help you contact your float plan-holder if necessary), and that you close out your float plan upon returning to port.
