Welcome aboard the River Runner for our cruise of the Trent-Severn Waterway. We will be departing from Clayton, New York, in the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River and will make a couple of stops on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario before entering the waterway at Trenton, Ontario. We will update the log on the Lakeland Boating website each day with pictures, interesting observations and lessons learned along the way. Additionally, two members of our crew will test the shoreside overnight accommodations each night and offer their impressions for those small-boat owners who may want to make the trip but find sleeping aboard every night a bit cramped.
Let us introduce ourselves. We will be a crew of four. Our captain is Fred Kaufhold, who has been aboard Lakeland Boating’s previous two internet cruises on the Legacy going south and north. His best mate is his wife, Stephanie. They have cruised together in Europe, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and Bahamas and up the East Coast. In the spring and fall they deliver other people’s boats. Joining them will be Stephanie’s parents, Roy and Nadine Perschy, who have served as crew in the past. They will provide the shoreside accommodation perspective.
Now let us introduce the River Runner. Our sturdy vessel is a 35-foot Duffy custom-built trawler. She has a Maine lobsterboat hull with a single diesel engine. She entertains six and sleeps two comfortably. With a low profile (no flybridge) and good visibility all around from the raised pilothouse, she is a good boat for canals and rivers.
We are looking forward to our trip and hope you find it entertaining to follow along. Please feel free to send us an e-mail via Lakeland Boating at lb@omeara-brown.com if you have any questions or suggestions. Our ability to send and receive information may vary as we travel, so please bear with us. If you see us along the way, give a cheery wave or a toot of your horn.
Safe boating, Captain Fred
